Canggu | The hotspot to fall in love with!
I spent almost three weeks in Canggu of two months in Indonesia. I love this place! And you will definitely love it too! Warning: you may no longer want to leave Canggu. #TrueStory What’s so fascinating about Canggu? This is not a traditional Balinese town. But once you’ve got that Canggu feeling, you’ll know exactly why I love Canggu. Here you will find a healthy mix of all activities. Digital normads are happy about fast internet. Surfers enjoy great surf spots here. Bloggers and photographers support each other in a huge community. Foodies can look forward to incredible food. Backpackers find cheap accommodation and great contacts. Let’s go!
SURFSPOTS
You can surf in Canggu all year around. Surf camps, surf schools, surf guides and above all waves! There are many different beaches in the area, which are very suitable for beginners and advanced surfers. You can find surf shops on every beach to rent a board or book your first surf lesson. Here you will also find private lessons that are really recommended for the first few moments on the surfboard. At Batu Bolong Beach, the guides are generally cheaper than at Echo Beach next door.
As soon as you step onto the beach, you immediately feel the chilled surfer beach vibe. I’m still rather talented in the waves. But even without surfing, it is incredibly fun to watch the surfers or to enjoy the view of a few well-built sexy bodies.
YOGA
If you are more into yoga, you will find some yoga studios that are furnished with lots of love and a great atmosphere. The hotspot on Bali for yoga is definitely Ubud. Here you can find my personal Ubud guide.
For the yoga lovers who prefer the proximity to the beach, there will definitely be great opportunities in Canggu. You can take various courses in the many studios and even complete your training as a yoga teacher. My favorite, where are different courses take place every day: The Practice.
In addition, there is an event here every Tuesday evening, such as a movie night, live bands or silent mediations.
NIGHTLIFE
Chill out in a cozy beanbag with a live band, sip a cocktail luxuriously in a rooftop pool or hang out in a skate bowl and get a tattoo spontaneously. Welcome to Canggu!
- My all time favorite: Backyards! There is great live music from a cover band every night. Mondays and Wednesdays are mostly Latin Nights – you can try salsa or bachata or just play billiards and cool off in the pool.
- Celebrating until light night in Sandbar (Batubulong Beach) is also a must in Canggu. The DJ plays all genres of music. Locals and tourists simply enjoy a huge party in the sand barefoot until sunrise. When you leave the party, treat yourself to a freshly grilled corn as a snack for your way home.
- Deus is one of the most famous and popular places. Especially on Sundays it’s full thanks to very good live music. There are free tattoos and tacos on Tuesday evenings!
- Great pizza, free shots and afterwards party are available in Luigi’s Hot Pizza.
- Hipsters, skaters and surfers like to stay in the Pretty Poison. You will find a large skate bowl, Happy Hour from 4 to 6pm and DJs with rock n ‘roll, hip hop and techno.
FOOD
As a foodie, you get your money’s worth in Canggu every evening. Traditional Indonesian dishes, Italian stone oven pizza, Mexican wraps, vegan, vegetarian, healthy, double-bacon-avocado-cheese-burger […]. The list is endless, you are almost overwhelmed with the choice of the dinner location. Here are my favorite restaurants:
CRATES CAFE
I’ve never been to a cafe as often as I’ve been to the Crates Cafe. It’s one of the trendiest breakfast locations. Perfect for early risers or early bird surfers, the cafe opens at 6am. For late risers like me there is the most brilliant breakfast and lunch selection all day long until the shop closes at 4pm. You will find smoothies, bowls, sandwiches, breakfast platters and very good coffee! Each dish from the menu costs 55.000 IDR. The price-performance ratio is really unbeatable, since the portions are huge and are also brilliantly arranged for bloggers.
BBQ DINNER
At Echo Beach you can enjoy a fresh all-you-can-eat BBQ including sunset! When you walk towards the beach, there are various bars on the left that offer different BBQs. For example, you can choose a tuna fillet, pay 70,000 IDR and fill your plate with salads, grilled vegetables and rice dishes as often as you want while waiting for your fish.
ICE CREAM IN SCOOP GELATO
Of course there are an infinite number of shops where you can get a scoop of ice cream. You can find the small ice cream shop SCOOP in the shop Bomba. There you can look between the cool designed household goods and some clothes and then treat yourself to an ice cream. The portions are really big and just incredibly delicious. Tested and more than delicious: Cookies, Coconut, Raspberry and Citrus!
COFFEE IN LA BRISA
La Brisa belongs to the higher price category, but the location and the beautifully designed ambience alone are worth a visit! If the food and cocktails are too expensive for you, you can simply pick one of the beanbags on the beach, enjoy the delicious coffee and the La Brisa vibe.
SHOPPING
Caution! You can spend your money very quickly in Canggu. The clothes, accessories and decorative items in the small boutiques are super nice but often also quite expensive. There is also no negotiation. But if you want to deal about prices, Love Anchor is the place for you! You will find jewelry, bags, colorful shirts, wood carvings and souvenirs. The bazaar is open from Monday to Friday until 7pm and on weekends the number of stands and the selection increases enormously! You will definitely find your outfit suitable for Canggu and a souvenir for those who stayed at home.
DAY TRIPS
Do you love the atmosphere in Canggu, don’t want to leave the place but still want to see more of Bali? The central location of Canggu is perfect for taking a few day trips in the area and still returning to your favorite bar in the evening. You can easily go anywhere with GOJEK or grab a scooter and go yourself.
TANAH LOT TEMPEL
The Tanah Lot Temple is one of the most famous temples in Bali and a very popular tourist destination. Due to the many crowds, especially during the sunsets, the cultural, Balinese flair is unfortunately somewhat lost. Nevertheless, a visit is worthwhile! At low tide you can walk through the mudflats to the rock tower on which the temple is located and let yourself be blessed. The rest of the temple complex is in my opinion much nicer and a little less crowded. Beautiful ornate walls surrounded by colorful flowers with a view of the sea.
NYANG NYANG BEACH
Nyang Nyang Beach is perfect for a relaxing day trip. Here you will find endless peace from the hustle and bustle of Canggu and even at lunchtime the beach is not crowded. From Canggu you drive by scooter about 1 1/2 hours to the parking lot from the beach and then pay 2,000 IDR parking fee. Then you climb down through a small forest for twenty minutes and up again for about thirty minutes. (People with a better physical condition than me can definitely do it faster :D) When you get to the bottom, an almost deserted, white beach and wonderfully clear water wait for you.
TIP: Prepare yourself with some snacks and drinks before. There is a small kiosk on the beach but you definitely spend more money there than in the supermarket.
ULUTWATU TEMPLE
Visit the Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple and watch the Kecak Fire Dance. This traditional Balinese dance starts at 6pm in the temple. It is best to buy the tickets at 4 pm so that you still get a seat. Then you can walk the two remaining hours through the great temple complex and enjoy the view of the beautiful cliffs. Caution: monkeys!
GOOD TO KNOW
RENT A SCOOTER
The most convenient and flexible option to get from A to B in Canggu is to rent your own scooter. You can find the rentals at every corner in Canggu and you pay 3 to 5 euros per day for a proper scooter. Here you can find tips on renting a scooter, road rules and how to escape corrupt police controls.
GOJEK & GRAB
If you don’t want to drive yourself, the best way is to call a Gojek or Grab. No matter whether you call a car or a scooter driver — you are definitely on the road safely. The locals know the traffic rules, abbreviations or can show you completely new beautiful places.
ATMS & CARD PAYMENT
You can pay by credit card in almost every cafe and restaurant. For the smaller kiosks or the small shops on the beach, you should take cash with you as a precaution. ATMS are available on every corner in Canggu from several providers.
WHERE TO STAY IN CANGGU
Luxury — COMO Uma Canggu: Panoramic view to Echo Beach, wellness center, high-class dishes at any time of the day. Welcome to the COMO Uma. Do you fancy a real luxury vacation? You can find it here from 230 euros per night, which is more than worth it!
Value — Papillon Echo Beach: From 45 euros you can spend a night in a double room in the Papillon on Echo Beach! If you are traveling as a couple, this is really a good place to stay. Only a few minutes to the beach, a great breakfast buffet on the roof of the hotel, super comfortable beds and a wonderful bathroom.
Budget — Balicabana Bungalows: I spent almost 3 weeks here. There are many hostels in Canggu. The Balicabana is a little further out (5 minutes by scooter to Batu Balong Beach) but is just a great hostel! In the small bungalows are six beds. Everything is cleaned properly every day and you can get new bed sheets or towels at any time. The hostel is perfect for getting to know new people: billiards, darts, table tennis and a pool with beanbags for chilling out. The owner Giovanni and his wife are super loving and make a very good Italian pizza in their own stone oven. I met the best travelers here, with whom I traveled later to Nusa Penida, Gili Air and the Philippines!
