Oahu | 3 beautiful beginner hikes
Oahu is the perfect spot for everyone who loves adventure in their vacation and especially for the sporty ones who like cycling, climbing or hiking. The island also offers easier hikes for beginners, families or just more relaxed half-day tours.
My physical condition is almost non-existent and a day before my vacation on Oahu I still had a 39.7 degree fever — and the hikes were really manageable with a few short breaks.
At the end of each climb you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view!
1 | MAKAPU’U LIGHTHOUSE HIKE
It takes just 25 minutes by car from Waikiki to the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trailhead. Depending on how late you arrive at the starting point, you may have to park your car a little further away and walk a few meters longer. But thanks to the car queue and the hikers you can’t miss the start of the trail.
The Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail is one of the best Oahu hikes with a super beautiful view. The whole way is paved! Under these circumstances, it is even pleasant to walk around with a stroller or your dog. The gradient is easy — but be prepared for the fact that you are walking for about 1 1/2 – 2 hours.
2 | DIAMOND HEAD TRAIL
The Diamond Head Crater is one of the most popular hikes for tourists which also starts from Waikiki. After about 40 minutes of hiking you have a wonderful view above Waikiki Beach and the ocean. The entry of $2 is definitely worth it for this brilliant viewpoint! If you don’t want to hike alone, you can also take a guided tour and learn some facts about the history of Oahu at the same time.
By the way, the Diamond Head with its 231 meters is the most famous landmark of Oahu. Accordingly, it’s of course really crowded when you arrive at the top. But because of the view into the crater including the great Oahu panorama you will forget the many tourists and stairs from the hiking.
3 | LANIKAI PILLBOX TRAIL
A few minutes from Lanikai Beach there is the Pillbox Trail. The climb should be especially beautiful during sunrise. But as a non-early riser I can also guarantee that a hiking after sunrise is also worthwhile. The way is very short but at the same time very steep and especially slippery on the way back. If you are a bit careful and don’t wear flip flops, the way should be easy for you.
If you have to fight too much and your circulation doesn’t work as it should in the heat, you already have a small viewing platform halfway!
The feeling of having reached the top and sitting on the highest point is incredibly awesome! At that point I realized that I was sitting on a rather small island surrounded only by the ocean. Somehow a crazy perception at the moment and a wonderful view at the same time.
After the way down everyone deserves a few relaxing hours at Lanikai Beach!
GOOD TO KNOW
On Google Maps you will find all places wonderfully marked, so that your navigation system simply guides you there.
The heat is the biggest challenge during the climbs. It’s best to start your trips very early in the morning when the sun isn’t that strong. Many parts of the hiking trails are in the blazing sun without the opportunity to hide in the shade.
So take sunscreen, sunglasses, water and head protection with you. Comfortable and sturdy shoes are of course also a must! You don’t need expensive hiking boots. But at least wear sports shoes in which you have a firm grip.
Let’s go!
